DeKalb Schools To Christen Obama Elementary

It's the first public school in Georgia to be named after the former president.

DECATUR, GA -- The DeKalb County School District will commemorate the opening of the new Barack H. Obama Elementary Magnet School of Technology this week.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place Thursday at the school, located at the former site of Clifton Elementary, 3132 Clifton Church Road.

Obama Elementary is the first public school in Georgia to be named after the former president.

The school was approved unanimously last May by the DeKalb County Board of Education at a cost of $23 million.

DeKalb's leaders will be on hand for the ceremony, including Schools Superintendent Stephen Green and Principal Angela Bethea.

When: Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 10 a.m.

Where: 3132 Clifton Church Road, Atlanta, GA 30316

Dr. Melvin Johnson, chair of the DeKalb school board, board member Dr. Michael Erwin, who represents the area, and Dr. Ralph Simpson, regional superintendent, are all slated to be in attendance.

The new school opened to students on Jan 5.
