Here are the top stories today in Decatur-Avondale Estates:

  1. DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources have joined forces to teach children about fishing. What's the old saying? "Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime." I feel that's a good way to view this program. The Gateway to Fishing Program will return for the third year and this year's programs are scheduled for May 20 and Aug. 11 from 8 a.m. to noon. The sessions will be held at Chapel Hill Park, 3985 Lehigh Blvd. in Decatur at the fishing pond. It is free and will also include other wildlife and a Mobile Catch Center.

  2. Operations at the Seminole Landfill will soon be discontinued. The decision was made by the DeKalb County Sanitation Department. No additional solid waste will be prohibited near the surrounding area. It's been reported that the location will be covered with dirt and grass. Construction has been underway since November 2022. That has been scheduled to be finished by June of this year. (On Common Ground News)
  3. The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office is now accepting applications for its summer camp. The program is free and has been extended from one to 30 days. The youth attending with be provided breakfast, a snack, and lunch. Initially, the program was for boys, in order to teach boys skills that would help prepare them as they grew to become men. It wasn't until last year that the program opened its doors for young girls as well. The two programs will continue as, "Boys to Men" and "Girls to Pearls." (11Alive.com WXIA)
  4. The DeKalb County Commission Board deferred the vote to raise the stormwater utility fee for residents for the time frame of 2023- 2025. This is ongoing and the discussion is scheduled to continue at the board's May 16 meetings. Presently the fee is $4 per residential unit. If the increase is approved, the fee will rise to $8 per month in 2023, $9 per month in 2024, and $10 per month in 2025. (Decaturish.com)
  5. Assistant City Manager Linda Harris reported that the city is collecting data on a text payment option that will allow motorists to make payments via text when parking in Downtown Decatur. The company that is working with the city is called Passport and it also provides enforcement software for Decatur. There are also other options when parking in the downtown area and the city has set up a website to be of assistance. Those interested can click here. (Decaturish.com)
