Here are the top stories today in Decatur-Avondale Estates:
- Registration is open for the 34th Annual DeKalb County Senior Olympic Games. To qualify, participants must be ages 50 and older, and from DeKalb County or the surrounding counties. Those who qualify must register by April 21. The games begin on May 1 at 9 a.m. and are scheduled to continue through May 12. The locations of the venues to host the events vary across DeKalb. Those who are in need of assistance regarding transportation can call MARTA Mobility at 404-848-5389. (On Common Ground News)
- On April 3, the Decatur City Commission approved the purchase of the property at 1010 N. Parkwood Road for $400,000. The land is scheduled to be used as an expansion of greenspace in the Westchester Hills area. During the city commission meeting on March 6, Phillip McGinnis, president of the Westchester Hills Neighborhood Association, asked the city commission to consider purchasing the land for the use of expanding its greenspace. - Residents at the Villas at Decatur have been dealing with maintenance issues and neglect, reportedly, since January. The problems were supposed to be addressed by April 1. Shuntaye Cooley, who lives at the property, continues to share photos and videos of mold and holes inside her apartment. According to reports, First Communities is the company responsible for the building's repairs. (11Alive.com WXIA)
- The DeKalb County School District showcased its Student Success Mobile Center on March 29, at Lithonia High School. The mobile center is scheduled to travel to schools across the district. Mobile visits are also scheduled at community events and within the surrounding neighborhoods. The center is a reminder of the importance of focusing on future goals and the value of solid post-secondary planning, according to reports. (Decaturish.com)
