Get Crafty! Garage Door Studio Celebrates First Anniversary October 2015

Garage Door Studio (GDS) is a creative haven, offering a unique shopping and arts experience. The brick and mortar space serves two-fold; the cooperative retail boutique features locally-crafted artistry and goods, and the instructional arts center offers DIY crafting, art classes and special events for adults and children.

The boutique highlights 60+ local artists and makers where inventory is diverse and updated consistently. Disciplines range from encaustic paintings, jewelry, clay works and letterpress stationery to home goods and handmade and vintage apparel. As a cooperative environment, the partners nurture those who are just beginning their careers as well as established artists. GDS takes pride in supporting local and strives to create an inspiring shopping experience.

WHAT:
October 1, 2015 marks the official one year anniversary. In celebration, the Garage Girls encourage art making and appreciation. All ages are invited to immerse and become inspired with unique opportunities and special savings.

WHEN:
Celebrate with the Garage Girls during October 2015

• During Avondale AutumnFest, October 3 - 4, enjoy 10% savings in the boutique.
• For the first 3 Saturdays in October, “Get your Craft On” in the art center.

WHY:
Join in the fun! Melding their combined knowledge of jewelry making, sewing and mixed media skills, the Garage Girls knew they could contribute to a vibrant DIY scene in Atlanta. The collective talents of Jen, Rachel, Patty and Lou, paired with fun music and a BYOB environment, has created a hands-on learning experience that combines being inspired and having a good time.

BACKGROUND:
GDS is owned by four professional artists who came together by doing handmade art shows out of their homes and teaching classes in their studios. Having developed a local following, the ‘Garage Girls’ found themselves busy with commissions, festivals and teaching classes. In late winter of 2014, they met over a glass of wine to discuss how to reinvent selling their wares alongside the artists and makers they had befriended over the years. Coincidentally, there was an opportunity to rent a space in downtown Avondale, formerly a theater. In October 2014, they took a leap of faith and opened a 2000 sq. ft. shop and creative studio.
