Here are the top stories today in Decatur-Avondale Estates:
- Faith leaders and scouts are scheduled to deliver free Girl Scout cookies and food for those faced with hardships. The distribution is scheduled for this Saturday, March 18, in DeKalb County. There are eight locations in total and 5,000 boxes of food will go out on a first-come, first-served basis. (11Alive.com WXIA)
- The self-acclaimed, undersigned clergy and people of faith from Decatur and the surrounding area spoke out and addressed a local news outlet. Their concern was getting the message out of their belief in communicating through nonviolence. During a rally, they spoke out about governments being held accountable for the decisions their law enforcers make. This was brought about in response to the shooting and killing of the environmental activist who was shot and killed by police in January of this year while protesting "Cop City." (Decaturish.com)
- A couple walking their dog yesterday at approximately 5:15 p.m. reportedly witnessed a youth being chased by police and later caught, and handcuffed. The couple stated that the individual seemed to be close to 10 years old. The Decatur Police said the juvenile along with others were wanted in connection to several felony thefts. Though the officers pointed a taser at the suspect, no one was injured. According to Sgt. John Bender, one of the burglaries in question took place at a residence in the 100 block of Coventry Road at 4:50 p.m. on March 13. (Decaturish.com)
- State Representative Billy Mitchell spoke at the Tucker City Council meeting on March 13. He was met by a large group of pickleball fans. They were all in favor of building a new pickleball facility, a sport that is gaining more and more popularity. The council also discussed paving roads, a housing study, and funding for the new Public Works department.
