I-285 Police Shooting, Chase Ends In DeKalb Man's Arrest

Multiple agencies chased a man through DeKalb after he was accused of pointing a gun at officers and later shooting at an officer.

DECATUR, GA — No one was injured in a police shooting and chase that stretched from Memorial Drive to near Interstate 675 on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

DeKalb County Police responded to a call for service around 1:15 p.m. in the 4000 block of Memorial Drive, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Police told WANF that a man was accused of brandishing a gun and threatening people in a fast food restaurant's parking lot.

When DeKalb and Avondale Estates officers arrived, the GBI said they encountered Ahmad Sulaiman, 19, of Clarkston.

Sulaiman was accused of pulling out a handgun and pointing it at an officer. The GBI said he then hit multiple vehicles, including police cars.

Officers began chasing Sulaiman on Interstate 285 south, where an Avondale Estates officer tried to perform a PIT maneuver on Sulaiman's SUV, the GBI said.

Sulaiman and the officer shot at each other but neither person was hit, the GBI said.

As the chase continued on I-285, the GBI said a DeKalb officer was able to pit Sulaiman's SUV and stop it near I-675.

Video released on an Atlanta-based Facebook page appears to show dozens of police cars chasing a black SUV, while a second video seemingly shows Georgia State Patrol and Atlanta Police joining several officers at the scene on both sides of the interstate.

Sulaiman was arrested, and he and an officer were taken to local hospitals, the GBI said. The officer has since been released, and the GBI said no one was injured in the incident.

DeKalb County Jail records on Wednesday showed Sulaiman is facing charges of two counts of aggravated assault and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer for a felony offense.

Once complete, the GBI's case file will be given to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
