ICYMI: DeKalb Police Accidentally Shoot One Another

Police also wounded a homeowner and killed his dog.

An officer shot while responding to a call Monday night appears to have been accidentally shot by another officer at the scene.

The officers opened fire after responding to the wrong house in regards to a burglary, according to reports. The homeowner was also injured, and a dog was shot and killed.

Police tell 11 Alive that the incident occurred in the 1500 block of Boulderwoods Drive after officers were dispatched regarding a burglary in progress call. Without knowing which house the burglary was taking place, police entered the back a home that matched the description given by dispatchers.

Once inside, officers encountered the family dog, who was shot and killed. The homeowner was also wounded by gunfire after he came out of a room near the kitchen, WSB-TV says. The initial investigation indicates that one officer accidentally opened fire on another, wounding him.

The officer and the homeowner were both shot in the leg, though the officer’s injuries were more severe than the homeowner’s, according to WSB-TV.

DeKalb police chief Dr. Cedric Alexander has asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to handle the investigation into the shooting.
