Here are the top stories today in Decatur-Avondale Estates:
- Namdar Realty Group bought the Gallery at South DeKalb last year for $19.3 million. Many business owners within the mall hoped this would be a change for the better. However, there has been very little change since last year when the mall was bought by Namdar Realty Group. In addition, the construction of "Cop City" the $90 million police training facility, isn't making matters easier. Due to these and many other factors, business owners in South DeKalb have taken matters into their own hands, investing in their own community. Businesses such as Mustafaβs Boxing Gym, Queen Sheba Fashion, and 360 Fixx are just a few businesses that remain open and hope to flourish and provide services and products to their community members and beyond. - The DeKalb County Board of Health is scheduled to hold its regularly scheduled meeting today, March 23, at the Richardson Health Center at 445 Winn Way in Decatur. The meeting will begin at 3 p.m. in the Bohan Auditorium. The public is invited to attend. Those interested in addressing the board can be placed on the agenda by contacting India Dyer at 404-294-3787. (DeKalb County Board of Health)
- United States Rep. Nikema Williams visited Agnes Scott College on March 21. Williams announced the college will receive an estimated $1.02 million in community project funding.
The funding will go towards promoting digital literacy, global learning, and professional success through technology. Agnes Scott College President Leocadia Zak credits Williams and her team for their hard work which paid off in making the funding a reality. (Decaturish.com) - The DeKalb History Center is scheduled to host its Annual Spring Fling fundraiser on Friday, March 24 from 7-10 p.m. The infamous event returns after three years. It will feature a silent auction with items from businesses and individuals from the community. Ten preferred caterers will be at hand, this is included in the purchase of the ticket. There will be a chance to win Taylor Swift tickets, which were donated by Mindy Pillow & Pillow Hayes Family Law, LLC. (Decaturish.com)
- After Jamar Perry sold thousands of copies of his first childrenβs book, βCameron Battle and the Hidden Kingdoms,β the author thought it would be a great idea to launch a nationwide book tour, so he did, but unfortunately, his invite to a two- panel author discussion at Little Shop of Stories, located in Decatur, didn't turn out as he planned. No one showed up for his event! Devastated and embarrassed, yet compelled to tell his story, the author took to social media. To his surprise that was the best decision, he could have made. Many who read his post connected with him and decided to purchase copies of his book. The 50 books that were supposed to be sold at the bookstore were bought, then 400 more, and the ripple effect continues! (Brunswick News)
