Jasper Man Charged In Death Of Passenger In 2016 Wreck

DECATUR, GA -- A Jasper man is charged in the death of a man who was his passenger in a vehicle crash on U.S. 78 in August, Patch has learned.

Dwayne Weaver, 52, is charged with homicide by vehicle, reckless driving, driving while his license is suspended or revoked and driving on roadways laned for traffic, according to records with the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office. Weaver, who was arrested Saturday, was behind the wheel of a Nissan Titan truck when the accident occurred on August 12 near Hugh Howell Road close to Tucker.

Sixty-one year old Forrest Kelly of Lilburn was killed in the wreck, which happened when Weaver's truck collided with a Chevrolet Camaro. Police investigated the incident as a hit-and-run accident at the time, according to news reports.

The incident was captured on dashcam video by a motorist, who turned it over to police. In the melee, Weaver's truck clipped a silver Mustang driven by Amanda Jarvis. She and her 15-year-old daughter were startled but she was able to regain control of her car and pull over.

“We’re lucky,” she told WSB-TV at the time. “The truck driver hit the wall and started to come back across 78. My daughter was crying, screaming. I told her to hang on."

Charges recently were levied against Weaver though, after authorities said that he caused the wreck by driving in the emergency lane in an attempt to pass the Camaro, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The crash caused Weaver to lose control of his truck, killing his Kelly.

Weaver remains in the DeKalb jail on a $1,500 bond, according to sheriff's office records.
