🌱 Juneteenth Celebrations + Guided Tours Of The Cosmos + STEM Grants

  1. The Avondale Estates City Commission decided it will hold a public hearing on June 28. The decision was made during the city's regular meeting, which was held on June 14. A variance request was made, however, there were no formal actions taken at the time of the meeting. (Decaturish.com)
  2. MARTA began the official work on the Summerhill bus rapid transit line. This project will produce quicker and less expensive ways to access transportation via MARTA. Lindbergh rail station and Decatur are included in this project. (11Alive.com WXIA)
  3. Juneteenth, now a national holiday, is Monday, June 19. The festivities for the national holiday have already begun in some areas and here in Georgia, locals can join in the celebration, which commemorates the day in 1865 when slavery officially ended in the United States. Centennial Olympic Park, 265 Park Ave., will host the Juneteenth Atlanta Parade and Music Festival. There will be live- cultural music, beautiful hand-made merchandise, fun activities, and much more.   4. Although air quality isn't at its best, there is still hope for locals who are interested in stargazing and guided tours of the cosmos. Fernbank Science Center, which is near Decatur, offers free public observations. These are available on Thursday and Friday evenings from 9-10 p.m., depending upon the weather.   5. Agnes Scott College, one of Georgia's all-women colleges, recently received a lengthy grant from NASA. The grant in its totality is nearly $750,000. The purpose of the grant is to promote women's pursuit of careers in STEM. The targeted careers are careers with a focus on science, math, and technology. (https://patch.com/)
