Here are the top stories today in Decatur-Avondale Estates:

  1. ReLeaf DeKalb announced it will continue with its tree planting initiative. Since its partnership with DeKalb County and Trees Atlanta, 214 trees have been planted since its launch in 2023. Another meetup will take place next on 611 Memorial Drive in Stone Mountain, not too far from Decatur. The event will be held from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. on March 11. (Press Release Desk)
  2. Funded by private donations and approved by the state Senate, the statue of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas will stand at the state Capitol. Democrats have criticized the bill saying that Thomas is a controversial figure. Sen. Ben Watson, who represents the part of Savannah that Thomas is from, reported that the Supreme Court Justice deserves to be honored and recognized on the grounds of the Capitol. (Online Athens)
  3. Rep. Dale Washburn plans to introduce legislation that would limit the control local governments have on regulating housing designs, according to the Georgia Recorder. The bill would change the state building code, minimizing the sizes of lots and square footage requirements. City officials in Decatur - Avondale Estates, and Clarkston, are in opposition to the bill. (https://decaturish.com/2023/02...)
  4. A driver whose vehicle hit a pedestrian, crashed into a handrail and flagpole, while entering Avondale Estates Post Office parking lot was let go without any charges. Police stated that due to the accident taking place on private property no charges were filed at the time. According to a spokesperson, the pedestrian complained about leg, hip, and back pain. DeKalb EMS later transported to the victim to the hospital. (Decaturish.com)
