MARTA Driver Fatally Shot Over $2.50 Bus Fare In Decatur: Reports

A passenger was injured in a shooting that killed a 47-year-old MARTA driver after a dispute over $2.50 in bus fare, per media reports.

DECATUR, GA — Two people have been arrested, while a third suspect remains at large, after the fatal shooting of a MARTA bus driver over a $2.50 fare, per media reports.

The shooting took place Friday at a Decatur MARTA station, where a passenger was injured and 47-year-old Leroy Ramos died, local newspaper The Champion reported.

Police told the news outlet the shooting was the result of a dispute regarding a $2.50 bus fare.

Two unnamed suspects were arrested, and officers are searching for a third person, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. A balloon release was recently held for Leroy Ramos, the news outlet reported.

"Leroy had a big heart," wife Monique Ramos told Fox 5 Atlanta. "We’re gonna stand united as a family for him."

The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 732, of which the union said Leroy Ramos was a member, released a statement calling for action. According to the union, MARTA staffers and riders have faced an increased amount of violent attacks through the years.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of our brother Leroy Ramos and the passenger who was shot and injured," Local 732 President/Business Agent Britt Dunams said in a news release. "It is a very difficult day for our members. A father of two daughters and a 7-year-old boy, brother Ramos was only on the job for a few months after moving from New York. His murder is a tragedy."

A GoFundMe, established for Leroy Ramos, raised more than $1,300 of its $55,500 goal as of Monday afternoon.
