Here are the top stories today in Decatur-Avondale Estates:

  1. Environmentalists continue their fight to "Stop Cop City," a name given to the 85-acre-wide piece of land officially called the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center. They are using their voices to express the rich history of the land that once was home to the Muscogee Creek people in the 1830s. It has been stated that these people were forced from their land as it was turned into a plantation and its people forced to up-root to Oklahoma. Despite the history behind the land, funds from The Home Depot, Chick-Fil-A, and Delta Airlines continue to propel the plan and completion of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center moving forward. (People's World)
  2. Republican House lawmakers approved a controversial bill Thursday morning. The bill prevents doctors from using surgical or hormone treatments for gender dysphoria in minors.
However, doctors are granted permission to prescribe drugs to minors that can block the effects of puberty. If the bill becomes law, any minor taking hormone treatments already may continue to do so. (The Current GA)
  3. The city of Decatur’s homestead tax exemption legislation for city taxes has been approved by The Georgia General Assembly. The next step is to send it to the governor. Once it's signed, the homestead exemptions could be on the ballot in November of this year. (Decaturish.com )
  4. Looking for a furry friend for your family? You can head over to Decatur-Avondale Estates animal shelters and rescue a pet. Many are available for adoption.
