- Students at Decatur High School agree that their teacher shouldn't be able to use the n-word but feel it is completely acceptable for them to use it because they are "Black." Disciplinary actions were taken against physics teacher, John Chesnut, who teaches at Decatur High. A forum with the Beacon Hill Black Alliance for Human Rights was held on December 21 where students expressed their outrage. Students in attendance reportedly stated that the word is “not a white people thing,” and therefore shouldn't be used by "White" people. (The College Fix)
- Mustafa’s Boxing Gym in Decatur is giving young men an alternative to using street violence as a method to solve their problems. The young men are taught life skills, and boxing and they said being at the gym makes them feel like they are amongst family. to see how they are making an impact on kids’ lives. One boxer, 14-year-old Kevonta James, says the gym is family. (WSB Atlanta)
- A mother and daughter were found deceased after an accidental house. According to the Troup County Fire Department, firemen found Elizabeth McDonald, 80, and her daughter “Libby” McDonald, 58 in their home after firefighters put out the flames. Officials have stated that the women will undergo autopsies at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s main office in Decatur. (WSB Atlanta)
- Leonard Thibadeau of Decatur passed away on Dec. 16 at the age of 71. He was surrounded by his loved ones when he passed at home. Anyone interested in planting a tree in honor of Mr. Thibadeau can visit the Sympathy Store.(Legacy.com)
