- “Our History is Under Attack — Save Our History,” will be the topic of discussion taking place at Rainbow Park Baptist Church, 2941 Columbia Drive in Decatur on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 10 a.m. The panel discussion will be hosted by NAACP DeKalb County branch and is in observance of Black History Month. The purpose of the discussion is to raise awareness regarding Georgia’s new laws restricting Black History being taught in public schools. Georgia’s new House Bill 1084 and Senate Bill 377 which include what some are saying are “divisive concepts,” is uniting legislators, educators, administrators, community members, parents, and students. The new laws are said to be placing restrictions on curricula that addresses slavery, racial oppression, segregation, and racial discrimination. Reports given by the NAACP have stated that teachers have been disciplined or fired due to the new legislation. The NAACP DeKalb branch is urging the community to come out and support their efforts and to learn more about the repercussions the bills might have on students in the public school system. Those who are unable to attend in person in person are invited to attend virtually. For more information and to register, you can visit the DeKalb NAACP’s website at www.naacpDeKalb.org or call 404-241-8006 or info@naacpDeKalb.org. (On Common Ground News)
- If you like tennis, badminton, or ping-pong, you might enjoy pickleball. The sport is said to be the fastest-growing sport in the country with nearly 36.5 million people playing. If you wish to give it a try Decatur has a few pickleball courts you may be able to attend, DeKalb Tennis Center, Decatur Family YMCA, and Ebster Recreation Center, to name a few. (Decaturish.com)
- Let’s Ride Atlanta is offering free shuttle rides to residents in need. The organization has partnered with other local businesses in order to connect residents to the local grocery store, Publix. The nearest Kroger closed down and residents had no other shopping store in close proximity. The program is said to continue until April. (GPB News)
