A 'Private Library' Is Expected To Open In Decatur, Critics Speak Out

Atlanta startup SwitchYards is expected to open a membership only library in January.

DECATUR — An Atlanta startup announced a “private library” of "deep work and focus" will soon open in Decatur, but not everyone is supporting the message.

Switchyards shared the news last week in a tweet saying that the new location would be: “designed specifically for focused work. The quietest room in the city. A gym for the mind.”

There’s also a $100 a month membership fee with a $25 reservation fee. That’s the part that didn’t resonate well with some, who also noted the city already had a free public library.

“Wow this is terrible lol, real good libraries exist,” tweeted one user.

“Imagine paying for a space that replaces the one you already paid for with your tax dollars, but this time, you don’t have to see any homeless people,” tweeted another.

“This is petit bourgeois gentrifier (stuff) and i will do literally everything in my power to prevent the success of your business,” posted someone else.

Not everyone is against the new space. Some actually expressed interest.

According to SwitchYards website, the Decatur location will only have 200 spots and then membership will be cut off. There is a waiting list, though.

“We’ve created this for top performers — those who truly want to get meaningful work done and are craving a space for it,” according to the website.

The “neighborhood work club” has locations Downtown, Cabbagetown, and soon, Buckhead. The Decatur location will be open 24 hours a day and seven days a week.
