Here are the top stories today in Decatur-Avondale Estates:
1. Decatur High School is back in session and students are voicing their opinions on the most recent actions taken towards teacher John Chestnut, the teacher who was disciplined for using racial slurs in the classroom late last school year. The Superintendent of City Schools of Decatur has written a letter to the school addressing the issue the school is facing and a couple of actions have been taken. Chestnut has been assigned to an alternative placement outside of the school, what and where that is exactly is yet to be known. Principal Rochelle Lofstrand is also on an alternative placement assignment outside the school. One student interviewed stated that even this isn't enough. He feels that the teacher should be fired because he doesn't feel comfortable being taught by someone who is, in his words, racist. More to come as this story unfolds. 2. DeKalb County police are working on identifying the body of a man found shot to death in Shoal Creek Park near White Oak Drive in Decatur. According to police, a woman was walking her dog at the park when she noticed a car with its doors wide open. She proceeded to see what was going on and found the man inside the car deceased. Those who walk their dogs and bring their children to the park stated that this wasn't surprising and that one entrance into the park needs to be blocked off to prevent cars from driving in. Police have a few leads to follow up on. They mentioned the victim appeared to be in his early 20s and the car is registered in a female's name. (https://www.fox5atlanta.com/ne...)
3. An ongoing issue is still brewing between DeKalb County Schools and the Police Chiefs in the county. The police chiefs want to install traffic cameras in school zones. DeKalb County Schools and cities in North DeKalb oppose this ticket due to their concerns that it may bring about an issue of racial profiling and misuse of funding.
