Here are the top stories in Decatur-Avondale Estates today:
- DeKalb County Commissioner Larry Johnson and 100 Black Men of DeKalb have joined together to host the “Youth Voicez: Violence Prevention Summit." The event will take place on Monday, June 12, at 4 p.m. The event will be held at Porter Sanford III Performing Arts & Community Center. Johnson's mission for the program is to bring awareness to the prevention of youth violence. The campaign is known as "Enough is Enough."(On Common Ground News)
- We're going to shine the spotlight on local talent. Fayrothedo, is a rapper, and a composer. He was born in the Decatur area. He also lived in the surrounding area of Stone Mountain. Fayrothedo is known for his song,"What We Doing. " (Creative Loafing)
- Juneteenth is arriving a bit early. There will be a pre-Juneteenth celebration today at Legacy Park, 500 S Columbia Dr, Decatur, GA, 30030. The event begins at 1 p.m. Those in attendance can expect to hear about the historical and cultural aspects of the national holiday. There will be food, fun, and live music! - With Father's Day soon approaching, we at Patch.com, have partnered with T-Mobile to celebrate and honor fathers for the hard work they pour into the lives of their children and community. - The DeKalb County School District is expected to continue its millage rate of 23.08 mills. Taxpayers, however, will pay more in taxes. There will be public hearings held to discuss this matter. - Happy update on a furry friend! Tess, a former neighborhood stray in Comer's found her forever home. Her foster, Jennifer Hardin, housed her until the, even more perfect home came along. She is now in the loving- long-term care of Miss Tess, who couldn't be more pleased with her new family addition. (Doggie Harmony Rescue via Facebook)
- For the folks at McClain Library, this year's seed library has been regarded as a great success. Students, faculty, and visitors have helped in retrieving a variety of seeds that will go towards its Agnes Scott community and more. (McCain Library, Agnes Scott College via Facebook)
- Last week, interfaith Green Team members from the Athens area joined GIPL staff. There teamed up at the Shoal Creek Sanctuary to learn about conservation and how the nature preserve can be a resource to their communities. (Georgia Interfaith Power & Light via Facebook)
