Here are the top stories today in Decatur-Avondale Estates:
- The Georgia State University Panthersville campus will soon be connected to the Avondale MARTA station. With this connection MARTA hopes to create more stops on its routes, making it more convenient for passengers. The announcement came on May 17 during a virtual meeting held by MARTA. (Decaturish.com)
- This month is National Foster Care Month. Here in Georgia, relatives of foster children, including grandparents, only qualify for foster care or kinship funds if there is a child who's placed within a home by the state or by a court order document. Many people believe there needs to be more assistance for families in these types of situations. There is one group that also wants to shine a light on this issue, Project GRANDD. This initiative provides rental assistance, emotional support, tutoring, and case managing support in other others for these families. They are able to help approximately 600 adults and children every year, and still, many are on their waiting list. - According to Decatur Police, a U-Haul pickup truck was driving through the Oakhurst neighborhood when it crashed and caused severe damage to the surrounding property. The vehicle crashed into a few cars before crashing into a pole. The incident occurred on May 17. The driver is facing a number of charges after being transported to the hospital due to injuries. - Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson and Commissioner Ted Terry's scheduled meeting was held yesterday evening at 6 p.m. The meeting was held at the Manuel Maloof Auditorium located at 1300 Commerce Drive in Decatur. On the agenda was the increase of fees needed to meet water infrastructure systems. Presently, residential rates are $48 per year. The increase may go up to $96 per year, beginning next year. According to data recorded by the county, DeKalb has undergone approximately 900 water main breaks every year, in recent years. (Patch)
