Qualifying Closes For Avondale Elections: See Who's On The Ballot

Three candidates, two of which are incumbents, will vie for two spots on the Avondale Estates City Commission in the November election.

AVONDALE ESTATES, GA — The candidates for Avondale Estates City Commission are now locked in for this year's general elections, set for Tuesday, Nov. 2.

Qualifying for the election ended Friday. The terms of Commissioner Lionel Laratte and Commissioner Lisa Shortell expire at the end of the year, which are the only two seats open on the city commission.

In Avondale Estates, all city commission elections are at-large and the candidates who receive the most votes win the election. Since there are three candidates and only two open seats, the top two candidates with the most votes will win those seats.

Laratte and Shortell are both running for reelection, and a third candidate is joining the mix: Ricardo Israel Korn. Korn serves on the city's Board of Appeals.

To qualify as a candidate the following requirements must be met, according to the city of Avondale Estates:

  • Be a resident of the city for a continuous period of 12 months prior to the start of the qualifying period.
  • Be a resident of the city during their period of service.
  • Be registered and qualified to vote in municipal elections of the city.
  • Not have been convicted of a felony at the time of qualification or during the period of service.

The last day for Avondale Estates citizens to register to vote in the upcoming General Election is Monday, Oct. 4. Early voting begins on Tuesday, Oct. 12, and Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 2.
