Here are the top stories in Decatur-Avondale Estates today:
- A rebellious raccoon was on the loose and got into a fight with two dogs! Yes, you read that right. The Georgia Department of Public Health reported that a raccoon, which later tested positive for rabies, was seen fighting two dogs on May 8 near Rhodes Farm in Columbia County. Fortunately, the dogs' rabies vaccinations are current. The testing on the animals was performed at the Georgia Public Health Laboratory (GPHL) here in Decatur. The Columbia County Health Department Environmental Health Section, which ordered the testing, recommends making sure pets are current on all their vaccinations, to make sure not letting your pets roam alone outside, not feeding your pets outside, and to make sure to teach your children the dangers of approaching random animals outside. (WJBF-TV)
- During Tuesday’s Board of Public Health meeting, members of the board gave their approval for a resolution to sell $975,000 in general obligation bonds. These funds will be allocated to repairs, renovations, and maintenance issues at the public health labs in Decatur and Waycross. (The Current GA)
- Leftie Lee’s, a Korean-influenced bakery and sandwich shop, was scheduled to open in the spring of 2022. Lee, the owner, said the opening of the shop was put on hold due to development issues. She has set up a Go Fund Me and is asking for the public's help in raising funds to open. She has raised $5,000 and her goal is to reach $40,000. Lee will be hosting a pop-up on May 13 at 6 Olive St. in Avondale Estates. The pop-up will begin at noon and will end when there's nothing left to serve! Lee said she just wants her shop to be a place where people land and just want to be there for a while. The new opening date for Leftie Lee's bakery is June 1. Lee is currently hiring staff.
