🌱 Renters Protest At City Hall + Bicentennial Funds Approved

Here are the top three stories in Decatur-Avondale Estates today:
- On Thursday morning, Decatur renters held a rally in front of city hall in protest of wrongful evictions. Over 200 people in Decatur are being forced out of their homes at Forest at Columbia Apartments. The complex's management company gave all their renters eviction notices with two months to evacuate the premises. The company says they are emptying the building for renovations. (KTVZ)
- Next year is Decatur's 200th anniversary of its charter. To celebrate, the Legacy Decatur board, which oversees Legacy Park, approved funds for the city's bicentennial celebration during their July meeting. Among the projects for the celebration that were approved are the Bicentennial Tree Project, the Two Hundred Stories Project, and the Decatur Trust Future Fund. (Decaturish.com )
- DeKalb County CEO Mike Thurmond has been named the Public Administrator of the Year by the Georgia Chapter of the American Society of Public Administrators. Thurmond was awarded the honor for his work leading the county from the COVID-19 pandemic. Also during his time in office, Thurmond implemented a $2 billion water and sewer system improvement plan.
