Here are the top stories today in Decatur-Avondale Estates:

  1. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Thomas Cox denied a request for a restraining order to stop work from being performed on "Cop City." The request was made by a DeKalb County Commissioner, The South River Watershed Alliance and a team member involved in the construction of the police training center nicknamed "Cop City" by activists. The complaint was against the Atlanta Police Foundation. Judge Cox expressed an understanding of the complaint however the legality of the situation took precedence. (Decaturish.com)
  2. 41-year-old Brian Dykes has been pronounced dead after being shot outside of a Dunkin' Donuts on Candler Road in Decatur. According to DeKalb County Police, 17-year-old Lamarion Orr took a gun from Dykes' waistband. Dykes chased Orr outside of the doughnut shop and the two began to fight, it was then Orr shot and killed Dykes before fleeing the scene of the crime. (11Alive.com WXIA)
  3. The Georgia Cotton Commission will conduct training sessions across the state informing proper use of pesticides. The times and dates of the sessions vary based on location. Decatur will hold its training on March 21, at 9 a.m. Registration may be required, and producers must own a private or commercial pesticide applicator license in order to purchase herbicides being sold. Those who attend will have their names posted on the Georgia Department of Agriculture’s auxin website at https://agr.georgia.gov/dicamba. (Southeast AgNet)
