Tornado Siren Test Planned for Decatur on Wednesday Evening
Routine test will begin at 5 p.m. and last for 1 minute, city says.

DECATUR, GA -- Residents in Decatur who are outdoors Wednesday evening may hear a loud alarm, but they shouldn't be concerned, the city said this week. Decatur will be testing its tornado siren at 5 p.m. to ensure proper functioning.
The test is a routine event that occurs every first Wednesday of the month.
The siren shouldn't last longer than 1 minute, the city said.
As tornado season ... South Georgia was hit by 40 tornadoes in the span of two days last week, the National Weather Service confirmed recently. The storms hit on Jan. 21 -- 23.

As many as 75 tornadoes ripped through the South two weeks ago, touching down in eight states. January was the second-deadliest month for tornadoes in U.S. history, nearly approaching the 1999 mark.
If inclement weather is imminent, the test will be put off until Thursday.
