Here are the top stories today in Decatur-Avondale Estates:

  1. In his State of the State speech on Jan. 25, Gov. Brian Kemp expressed how proud he is that within the past year the state has reported four of the most significant economic development projects in our state's history. He projected they will create over 20,000 new jobs and more than $17 billion in investments in rural communities throughout the state. Gov. Kemp gave praise to local leadership, and the work of those presently and previously within the chamber, who have been committed to the betterment of the state, making it "the No. 1 state for business for nine years in a row.” (Decaturish.com)
  2. At the DeKalb Board of Elections meeting on Jan. 27, Executive Director Keisha Smith reported that the DeKalb Voter Registration and Elections office is assigned a Center for Election Excellence by the U.S. Alliance for Election Excellence. Announced back in April of 2022, the program intends to create a support network for election departments and has a grant of $2 million. (Decaturish.com)
  3. Many of the dogs at Paws Atlanta awaiting adoption are senior dogs who have been in the shelter since they were just little pups. Nonetheless, there's still high hopes for their forever home. In order to promote the aging pups, JCPenny has teamed up with Paws Atlanta to capture professional pictures to show off the seniors' assets and sense of style. If you or someone you know someone is interested in adopting anyone of these furry little friends, you can contact Paws Atlanta for more information. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
  4. While there have been many gatherings across states in protests against the beating death of Tyre Nichols, a young African American male, the gathering that took place in Decatur Square was a bit different. Those who gathered on Sunday night came together for a peaceful vigil, with candles lit, to honor the life of a young man which was taken by the acts of what is being called police brutality. Approximately 100 people attended the vigil. Mawuli Davis, co-founder of Beacon Hill Black Alliance for Human Rights stated that people cannot simply let something as tragic as this to take place and "let it pass as if it was just another day." Video of the offense has been released. Five Memphis police officers have been arrested and charged with murder and other offenses. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
