Here are the top stories in Decatur-Avondale Estates today:
- According to Miller Grove Middle School Principal Sharon Evans, a weapon went off in one of the middle school's classrooms. It was confiscated by administrators and the School Resource Officer. There were no injuries. Principal Evans spoke out stating the student involved in this incident will face “district consequences” and there's a possibility the student will be charged criminally. Evans also mentioned the importance to of exercises the "See Something, Say Something" campaign. (Decaturish.com)
- A grant made available through funding from the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta and the State Charter Schools Foundation of Georgia has produced 16 Tesla chargers and three level II chargers at the Decatur Town Center parking deck at 546 Church St. The grant will also fund mental health counseling and provide barriers to protect Ivy Preparatory Academy's school building. Back in November of last year, a vehicle crashed into the school while classes were in session. Two students suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The project was completed the week of Feb. 5. - The Avondale Alliance for Racial Justice extended its submission deadline. Students now have until Feb. 17 to submit their artwork for the third annual student Black History Month art contest. The contest is open to students in grades K-12. Students must live in Avondale Estates or attend Avondale Elementary, Druid Hills Middle or High School, DeKalb School of the Arts, The Museum School, the Waldorf School and the Friends School. The awards ceremony will be held on March 4. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners. (Patch)
- Although they are without major personnel, the DeKalb County Schools officials are moving forward in creating a budget for its Fiscal Year 2024, which begins on July 1. They have no chief financial officer and are still looking for a new superintendent. Cheryl Watson-Harris was fired nearly a year ago. Interim Superintendent Dr. Vasanne Tinsley has gained support in filling the position for a full term. (Decaturish.com)
