6th District Race: Poll Shows Ossoff Leading With 43 Percent

BREAKING: SurveyUSA poll commissioned by WXIA shows political newcomer Ossoff leading 6th District race two weeks before election.

EAST COBB, GA -- A new poll gauging Georgia's 6th congressional district race shows Democrat Jon Ossoff pulling away from the Republican candidates with about two weeks left before the special election.

The SurveyUSA/ WXIA poll shows Ossoff, a first-time candidate who joined the race after serving as a congressional aide to Congressmen Hank Johnson and John Lewis, to be a heavy favorite to strip the 6th District from the Republicans.

In the poll, Ossoff has 43 percent of likely voters followed by Republicans Karen Handel (15 percent) and Bob Gray (14 percent). Dan Moody is next in line with 7 percent. The others make up about 15 percent combined.

"Polls are just polls. Now, it's all about turnout," Ossoff told WXIA. "Turnout is key, but so, too, is uniting people around our vision for a local economy."

Ossoff, an investigative filmmaker, is one of 18 candidates seeking to replace Tom Price, who vacated his seat to serve as the nation's health secretary.
Although the district -- which encompasses affluent areas of Cobb, Fulton and DeKalb -- has been strongly Republican for more than two decades, Democrats believe they can "flip the Sixth" after Trump's razor-thin victory over Hillary Clinton in November.

All 18 candidates are scheduled to appear at a debate Wednesday evening at the Georgia-Pacific Center. The event is sponsored by the Atlanta Press Club.
