Celebrate Black History Month In Cobb | Full Slate Of Events

Here's the calendar of events to help you celebrate Black History Month.

MARIETTA, GA -- February is Black History Month, and Cobb County libraries will host a variety of free events for all ages. The special programs include art, dance, historical research, movies and lectures highlighting prominent and lesser known stories in our nation’s history.

Upcoming events this month include:

  • Black History Month Storytime at Windy Hill Library 10:30-11:15 a.m, every Tuesday in February Celebrate Black History Month with specially-themed storytimes celebrating the lives and achievements of African Americans focusing on courage, cultural traditions and family.   • Treasures of the Georgia Room’s African American Collection: The Influence of Black Churches in Georgia at Windy Hill Library 11 a.m.-noon, Wednesday, Feb. 6 Staff from Switzer Library’s Georgia Room will review the history and importance of several prominent African American churches in Georgia.   • African American Author’s Discussion Group at Stratton Library 6:30-8 p.m., Monday, Feb. 11 Participants will discuss "Here Comes the Sun" by Nicole Dennis-Benn. For more information, call 770-528-2522.
  • National African-American Read-in at Switzer Library 2-3:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 16 Read a 3-5 minute excerpt from your favorite black author. You can bring your own selection or make a selection from the books on hand. For more information, call 770-528-2320.
  • Make and Take Crafts at Lewis A. Ray Library 2-4 p.m., Monday-Friday, Feb. 18-22 Craft events for children of all ages with a Black History Month theme. The library will provide all materials and directions to create your crafts. For more information, call 770-801-5335.
  • Family Craft Time at South Cobb Regional Library 2-3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 19 Participants will make African necklaces inspired by the Maasai people of Kenya and Tanzania, while learning about their cultures. For more information, call 678-398-5828.
  • Taste of Africa and Cultural Performance at Switzer Library 2:30-5 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 19 This family-friendly cultural event will celebrate African delicacies and dancing. Bring along recipes for a recipe swap and then sit back and watch Switzer teens perform traditional African dances while enjoying traditional African cuisine. For more information, call 770-528-2320.
  • Black History Month Crafternoon at Kennesaw Library 11 a.m.-noon, Thursday, Feb. 21 Learn about and celebrate a variety of black innovators, artists and leaders by making a craft in their honor. For more information, call 770-528-2529.
  • Black History Month Paper Quilt at Stratton Library 3:30-5:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21 Kids ages 3 and up will learn about Black History Month, teamwork, and artistic expression. We will each create a square to add to a paper quilt that when finished will be displayed in the library. For more information, call 770-528-2522.
  • Make it Thursday: Black History Month Quilt at Powder Springs Library 4-5 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21 This crafts club for kids ages 5-9 years old will be making Freedom Quilts in honor of Black History Month. For more information, call 770-439-3600.
  • Black History Program: I am a Lioness at Vinings Library 2-4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 23 Special guest lecturer Dr. Piper Huguley-Riggins will present a program on how she uses historical fiction to reveal black women hidden figures of history. Author and Literary Golden Heart Award Finalist Dr. Hughley-Riggins teaches composition and various American literature courses at Spelman College. She is the author of the Reconstruction era “Home to Milford College” series. Registration is recommended. For more information, call 770-801-5330.
  • TAG Thursday at Switzer Library 4-5 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 28 Elementary-aged kids will get to participate in a hands-on event to celebrate Black History Month. For more information, call 770-528-2320.
