Cool, Wet, Tornado-Free Return to Work

Here's what you should know to start Sept. 6 in East Cobb.

1. The good weather news is that the heat and the tornado threat are in the past; the bad news is that the rain is not going away as we head back to work and school after a three-day weekend. Showers with a chance of thunderstorms will continue until 2 p.m., the National Weather Service says, and lighter rain could fall through the afternoon with a high temperature of 71. The temperature will fall to 59 overnight, and the chance of rain will drop to 30 percent.

2. The moves to tonight for a hosted by Republican state Sen. Judson Hill. Besides Hill, East Cobb politicians expected to attend the meeting on the proposed 10-year, 1-cent regional sales tax for transportation projects include state Reps. Matt Dollar and Sharon Cooper and county Commissioners JoAnn Birrell and Bob Ott. The meeting starts at 7 p.m.

3. Coming off their first loss of the season, an against fellow defending state champion , the return to the against at 5:30 p.m. and Northwest Whitfield at 7:30. That’s the only varsity action scheduled today after the holiday weekend.

In cross country over the weekend, Walton’s boys won the UGA Invitational, led by sophomore Kenan Farmer in sixth and junior Brian Sullivan in ninth, and finished eighth, led by junior Adel Yoonis in 38th and freshman Ryan Peck in 44th, GaTFXC.com reported. Among the girls, Walton was third, led by junior Alexa Womack in sixth, and Wheeler was 18th, led by freshman Emily Gutmann in 85th. Pope competed in the Berry College Clara Bowl Invitational and finished eighth on the boys’ side out of 54 AAAA and AAAAA teams and 15th on the girls’ side of out 49 teams, according to GaTFXC.com. The fastest Greyhounds were Molly Schenck, who finished fourth, and Patrick Fleming, who finished sixth just 12 seconds behind the race winner.

5. The nasty weather spawned by Tropical Storm Lee wreaked havoc with a couple of East Cobb food festivals Monday, Nibble & Noshfest at Temple Kol Emeth and the Holy Smoke BBQ and Music Festival at . But East Cobb Patch was there and got photos on Sunday and on Monday.
