East Cobb Pipeline Work Begins This Weekend

Lane closures will be required as part of the project; school commutes may be affected by the changes.

Parents who drive their kids to and from some schools in East Cobb will have to adjust their commutes next week once a project to install a new pipeline gets underway.

The East Cobb Pipeline project will replace 6.1 miles of outdated pipes with new plumbing that will meet the area’s water needs for years to come, the Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority says. Phase 1 of the project was set to begin last weekend, but the contractor ran into unexpected problems and has been forced to push back the start of the project to Saturday, Sept. 19. Furthermore, the start point of the project has been shifted to Terrell Mill Road just north of Haverford Lane.

Traffic delays are expected around Sope Creek Elementary, Eastvalley Elementary, Brumby Elementary, East Cobb Middle, and Wheeler High, Cobb County Schools says.

The Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority says that traffic delays may begin as soon as Friday, with crews preparing to shift lanes of traffic in advance of the work beginning. The first phase of the project will be between Terrell Mill Road and Powers Ferry Road, with Phase 2 carrying the work up to Cobb Parkway at the beginning of next month. Phase 3, slated for next spring, will focus on Indian Hills Parkway and Cove Drive, along Lower Roswell Road, to Terrell Mill Road just north of Haverford Lane.

The project should be complete by 2017.
