- Pearson Middle School in Marietta has been supporting the local community by giving residents a place to shop for fresh food and gently used items - without paying a penny. In a single day, The Fresh Market gave out about 6,000 pounds of vegetables, meats, dairy products, and daily essentials. The Pilot’s Hangar, meanwhile, offers clothes, diapers, bedding, and other much-needed items. The markets are open every two weeks, and items are provided by MUST Missions and the Atlanta Community Food Bank. (Press Release Desk)
- An East Cobb man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for child sexual exploitation. In 2021, 65-year-old Steven D. Porter was found to be in possession of a thumb drive containing more than 300 photos and videos of children participating in explicit sexual acts. Porter will serve at least two years in prison, after which he will remain on probation and be registered as a sex offender. (East Cobb News)
- Cobb Chamber is in for a busy month, with multiple major events on the horizon. The Healthcare Industry Council is scheduled to discuss health and medical-related issues in Cobb, and there will be a Cobb Executive Women September Luncheon for professional women. Later in the month, there will be a Hispanic Professionals Business Mixer - and for some fun, don’t forget the Cobb Chamber Taylor English Golf Classic. See the full list for dates and additional information. (Cobb Chamber via Facebook)
Today in and around East Cobb:
- Memory Caregivers Support Group at Historic Roswell Place Senior Living in Roswell (1:00 PM)
- Live At Brew: Shetlands at Strand Theater in Marietta (7:00 PM)
From my notebook:
- Readers, get ready: All Cobb County Public Libraries will be closed on Monday, Sep. 5 for Labor Day. They will not be offering curbside hold pickup hours either - but luckily for readers and library lovers, normal service will resume on Tuesday. (Cobb County Public Library via Facebook)
- Summer may almost be over, but there’s still a chance to soak up some fun at Seven Springs Water Park in Powder Springs. It’s worth driving from East Cobb to spend the day sliding, splashing, or just floating down the lazy river. This is the last weekend before they close for the season, so be sure to visit while you still have time. (Cobb County Government via Facebook)
- Avast, mateys! Talk Like A Pirate Day may only be on Sep. 19, but Cobb County Public Library wants you to shiver your timbers all month long with their Draw A Pirate Ship contest. Contestants can draw, paint, or create 3D models of their very own pirate ship. (Cobb County Public Library via Facebook)
