Pope, Sprayberry Earn First Wins
Walton and Lassiter won their region openers, and Kell remained unbeaten.

For a Pope team that has given up an average of more than 50 points a game, holding an opponent to less than half that was more than encouraging.Â
The 24 points the Greyhounds surrendered to Northview were a season low, and they managed to hang on for a 28-24 win at The Hound Pound Friday night.Â
Pope (1-3), which got three touchdowns from Logan Carr, two receiving and one on the ground, plays next week at Cambridge.Â
Sprayberry has struggled to score all season, but on Friday at home the Yellow Jackets got strong performances from several players on offense in a 45-28 win over Forsyth Central.Â
Raheem Myricks and Shane King each scored two touchdowns for Sprayberry (1-3), which plays at Sequoyah next week.Â
A missed extra point made in the last minute of play made all the difference as Lassiter nearly gave up a big lead and held on for a 42-41 win over Cherokee.
The Trojans were up 35-7 but then Cherokee stormed back, and the Warriors were all ready to tie it with a touchdown with 42 seconds to play. But the missed point-after try enabled Lassiter to move to 2-2 on the season and 1-0 in Region 5-AAAAAA
The Trojans visit Woodstock next week.Â
Walton was at Woodstock on Friday, and also survived a shootout, winning 44-40.Â
The Raiders nearly squandered a 17-point lead but improved to 2-2 and 1-0 in the region. Price Wilson threw for two touchdowns and Chad Clay had three TD catches for Walton, which plays at Cherokee next week.Â
Wheeler fell behind to Etowah early and couldn't catch up, losing 31-14 to drop to 2-2 and 0-1. Elijah Staley threw for 2 TDs for the Wildcats, who play at Milton next week.
Kell, ranked No. 3 in Class 5A, remained unbeaten in a 32-7 home win over Creekview. The Longhorns (4-0) visit North Springs next week.Â
