Rare 'White' Squirrel Appears In East Cobb

Furry animals not typically seen in Georgia have latched onto one homeowner.

EAST COBB, GA -- Imagine you're in the forest or in your wooded backyard and an all-white creature passes quickly before your eyes. Was it a ghost? A vision? Wildlife experts say it could be a much more benevolent phenomenon: a white squirrel.

Several of the all-white animals have been visiting an East Cobb couple for weeks now.

Don and Dottie Weissman said that the rare animals have been populating their property since the first of the year.

“We don’t know where they came from, but we’re happy to have them,” Don told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The most common species in Georgia is the gray squirrel, known for its typically brown coat and orange-hued underside. They love the high-density areas around metro Atlanta.

Less common, but plentiful in rural areas is the fox squirrel, characterized by more colors, from black to dark brown, according to information from the state Department of Natural Resources.

But a totally white squirrel? That's a rarity, especially in urban areas like metro Atlanta, a wildlife official with the state Department of Natural Resources tells the AJC.

White squirrels sightings are big up North, though. So much so that there are people who document the appearances of the furry fellows. This White Squirrel Spot Report even allows users to log their encounters.

The squirrels, according to one researcher, are typically found in the northeastern regions of the United States, so having one -- or several -- appear in East Cobb is a pretty cool thing.
