Gwinnett Teen Armed With Gun, Knife Fatally Shot By Officers: GBI

The 17-year-old boy, who allegedly said he wanted to hurt himself, was accused of running towards officers with a knife in Gwinnett County.

SUGAR HILL, GA — A 17-year-old Sugar Hill teenage boy was shot and killed by Gwinnett County officers Friday after being accused of running toward officers while holding a knife, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

Officers responded around 4:30 p.m. to Whitehead Road near West Broad Street, where the teenager said he wanted to hurt himself and others, the GBI said. The boy told officers he had a gun and a knife, the GBI said.

When they arrived, officers saw the teenager near the road holding a knife, the GBI said.

Officers then commanded the the teenager to stop, telling him, "nobody wants to hurt you," the GBI said. The teenager ran toward officers while yielding a knife at them, the GBI said.

Officers then commanded the teenager to get down on the ground; however, the GBI said he refused and kept running toward the officers.

The GBI said officers shot at the teenager, who temporarily went to the ground before getting back up with the knife "still outstretched."

The officers shot again at the teenager, hitting him, the GBI said. The teenager, who police identified as Brayden Hemphill, was pronounced dead at the scene, the GBI said. No officers were injured in the incident, the GBI said.

The GBI is overseeing the probe into the shooting. Once the investigation is complete, it will be given to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review.
