121 Reach Club Offers Tutoring to Younger Peers
A partnership between high school tutoring mentors and middle school youth at RTMS mutually benefits all who participate in program.
121 Reach Club from Northview Branches out to assist RTMS Youth to do the best they can at school. The members of this tutoring service club can remember not so long ago that they were once in the shoes of these middle schoolers hoping to strengthen their academic skill by participating in this after school program. Whether it’s a momentary brush up on a skill or in depth assistance with lessons, these teens arrive at RTMS to lend their expertise and guidance forming a growing relationship that enhances both tutor or RTMS student involved.

feeling shy/inhibited asking the teacher to go over a concept again or asking a question but felt more comfortable asking my peers and so I do this knowing that these kids would be more comfortable asking high schools students.
In some cases, it’s best to work with a tutor who is already in the same school system who may have the skills and time that families may not be able to provide at home!

Besides that, the tutors also gain benefit from participating in this program. It’s about paying it forward and giving back to your community. It’s about working with all kinds of personalities with different gifts as well as challenges. One 121 Reach student shared “ It helps me learn how to speak to and interact with younger kids.” Perhaps a future educator may believe that it “Gives me confidence about my own learning- if you can teach it, you know it best!”
Any 6,7, or 8th grader can participate in this beneficial program which meets Weds from 4:10 pm- 5:15 pm in the media center. The 15$ per semester dues include the tee shirt and end of semester celebration. It is quite a bargain to get so many personal growth benefits and academic help with older peers in the community.
