Here are the top three stories in and around Johns Creek today:
- Forensic consultants with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation allege that environmental activist Manuel Esteban Paez Teran fired a gun at a Georgia State Patrol Trooper before they were fatally shot by law enforcement officers at the site of the Atlanta public safety training center. Test results found "more than five particles characteristic" of gunshot residue on the late Paez Teran's hands. The presence of gunshot residue on Paez Teran's hands suggests that they discharged a weapon prior to their death. Paez Teran died in a confrontation between activists and law enforcement officers near the public safety training center under construction in the South River Forest in Atlanta. (11 Alive)
- Down the road in Alpharetta, city leaders have voted to turn 47 acres near North Point and Windward Parkways into a mixed-use development. City council members voted unanimously at a meeting on Apr. 24 to approve the development, which is planned to have townhomes, condominiums, and office and retail space. One councilman, Jason Binder, was absent during the proceedings. (Alpharetta-Roswell Herald)
- Gwinnett County police are on the hunt for suspects accused of the attempted theft of a catalytic converter from a car in nearby Duluth. According to Master Police Officer Hideshi Valle, surveillance footage from the Walmart on Jimmy Carter Boulevard shows two men buying tools on Mar. 2. Two people matching the description of the men recorded at the Jimmy Carter Boulevard Walmart were later seen nearby with other suspects sometime shortly after midnight, in the process of trying to steal a catalytic converter from a 2014 BMW 435i. Anyone with more information on the case or the suspects should call detectives at 678-442-5653, or Atlanta Crime Stoppers, at 404-577-8477. (Gwinnett Daily Post)
