Here are the top three stories today in and around Johns Creek:
- A Ford Fry eatery, Irish pub, and more are planned for the "Medley" development soon to be underway at 16650 Johns Creek Parkway. Medley is a project by the Alpharetta-based Toro Development Company. Toro is also behind an apartment project —"Reid Flats" — in Reynoldstown. The Medley groundbreaking is scheduled for later in the year. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
- A Reserve at Johns Creek Apartments employee reported the theft of four containers of Freon and a digital gauge from the apartment's maintenance shed on May 5. Unfortunately, security footage of the scene has not yet helped authorities identify the suspects. According to the police report, no other items were moved or touched. (Appen Media)
- A new chair has been appointed to the Fulton County elections board. Fulton County is Georgia's most populous county-level subdivision, and is generally considered a safe Democratic seat in national elections; however, Fulton was hotly contested by the Trump campaign in 2020 and is known for delays in vote counting and long lines at polling places, although independent regulators maintain they have never seen any evidence of voter fraud. The County Board of Commissioners voted on Wednesday, May 17, to approve lawyer Patrise Perkins-Hooker as chair of the Registration and Elections Board. Perkins-Hooker was a surprise, "dark horse" pick, as last week Chairman Robb Pitts had nominated former commissioner Lee Morris. Morris is known to be a Republican and withdrew his nomination in an email to Chairman Pitts, where he stated he felt being a Republican chair of a Democrat-majority county elections board would only increase political tensions. The Commission's activities have been under scrutiny for some time by Georgia's Republican-led state government, which has passed legislation to allow the state government to run county-level elections in a county's place. From my notebook:
- The City of Johns Creek shared a sneak peek of the Rogers Bridge on Facebook. The bridge over the Chattahoochee River will give pedestrians a connection across the river to Duluth and Gwinnett County. The construction site is still not open to the public, and the city asks that no one attempt to enter the property or cross the bridge out of concern for their safety. (City of Johns Creek, Georgia - Government via Facebook)
- Angels Among Us Pet Rescue will be holding adoptions during the City of Johns Creek's Adaptive Recreation Movie Night tonight (May 19) at 7:00 p.m. (City of Johns Creek, Georgia - Government via Facebook)
- Barnwell Elementary hosted a spirit night last night, May 18. The event included trampolines set up by Sky Zone Roswell. (Barnwell Elementary PTO via Facebook)
