Here are the top three stories today in Johns Creek:
- In a statement Tuesday, Jan. 31, Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat suggested that agencies with SCORPION units, which stands for Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods, should be renamed after Tyre Nichols was killed by officers in a SCORPION unit in Memphis. The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office SCORPION unit, one of several SCORPION units in Georgia, was created in July 2021 and currently consists of 14 members who are required to wear body cameras. Labat said the "heinous actions of the officers in Memphis have cast dishonor and suspicion on the title SCORPION. We believe a name change is important but realize it is not in itself, a solution." (WSB-TV)
- Johns Creek Democrat Michelle Au and Decatur Democrat Mary Margaret Oliver are proposing a package of gun safety legislation that includes three bills to the state House of Representatives. Au's two bills include a three-day waiting period to purchase a gun and universal background checks on all gun purchases. Oliver's bill would allow police to charge a gun owner if their unsecured firearm is stolen and then later used to commit a crime. Columbus Republican Randy Robertson believes there are already laws, such as reckless endangerment, that cover the same idea as Oliver's bill. (WSB-TV)
- In 2023, Johns Creek City Council work sessions and regular meetings will be held on Tuesdays instead of Mondays. In observance of Presidents Day, city offices will be closed on Monday, Feb. 20. (City of Johns Creek via Twitter)
