Here are the top three stories today in and around Johns Creek:
- One person is dead and another is hospitalized after a graduation party shooting near southwest Atlanta's Benjamin E. Mays High School. The shooting is believed to have occurred around 2:30 a.m. the morning of Sunday, May 28, in the school's parking lot. As of later that Sunday morning, police have not released any information pertaining to arrests or to the status of anyone else who was present where and when the shooting occurred. (Fox 5 Atlanta)
- Nearby Marietta City Schools will be participating in the Seamless Summer Option program to provide free meals to children under 18 during the summer. The SSO (Seamless Summer Option) program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture with the aim of addressing child hunger by helping to feed children who can't reliably access the food they need without school lunches. Free meals will be available from May 30 to Jul. 28, at any of Marietta City Schools' 34 locations, with no registration, income, or residency restrictions, so anyone under 18 concerned about where their food will come from during the summer is encouraged to take advantage. (11 Alive)
- The Johns Creek Police Department will be hosting Coffee with a Cop at Divine Coffee, on 7725 McGinnis Ferry Rd, on Wednesday, May 31. The first five customers to come in and say "JCPD is Divine" will get a coffee and pastry on the JCPD's dime! Attendees can also enter to win a ride-along with an officer. - Firefighters have had their hands full in the past few days, with blazes both in downtown Atlanta and throughout the metro area. The first was in Smyrna on Church Road at a Country Inn and Suites, which began in the establishment's electrical room according to witnesses; the second, in an abandoned building near downtown Atlanta on Proctor Street, is believed to have been started by homeless or vagrant people in the area. No injuries have been reported in connection with either fire. (Fox 5 Atlanta)
- The City is inviting residents and visitors to stop by the Newtown Park Johns Creek Veterans Memorial Walk. The memorial features a hard-scaped trail, a fountain, sponsored granite benches, an entrance plaza, and a wooden gazebo, as well as "The Wall That Heals," a 250-foot replica of the Washington, D.C. Vietnam Veterans Memorial. (City of Johns Creek, Georgia - Government via Facebook)
- Local teacher Jeremy Noonan has resigned from metro-area Paulding County High School over concerns that remote testing is helping students to cheat and damaging the education system. Per Noonan, there's nothing stopping students from using Google to answer questions on remote examinations. Noonan has posted a video online detailing his concerns. (Atlanta-Journal Constitution)
