Here are the top three stories today in Johns Creek:
- On Monday, Nov. 28, Fulton County Judge Robert C.I. McBurney voided an indictment against six Fulton County Sheriff's deputies in connection to the death of Antonio May, a Fulton County Jail inmate. A grand jury had previously indicted deputies Aaron Cook, Guito Dela Cruz, Omar Jackson, Jason Roache, Kenesia Strowder, and William Whitaker on murder charges. McBurney wrote that the indictment is "quashed" because the state did not give the six defendants a chance to appear before a grand jury. He also said prosecutors could obtain a new indictment. (WSB-TV 2 Atlanta)
- Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said her office is focusing on gang members who recruit children, because she has seen children as young as toddlers being indoctrinated into gang activity. According to Georgia Juvenile Justice Commissioner Tyrone Oliver, about 50 percent of the youth in the Department of Juvenile Justice's long-term facilities refer to themselves as gang members and 40 percent of those in the regional youth detention centers admit to gang affiliations. (WSB-TV 2 Atlanta)
- On Monday, Nov. 28, lawmakers announced the creation of the Georgia Legislative Asian American Pacific Islander Caucus, the first-ever caucus dedicated to one of the state's fastest-growing populations. The bipartisan caucus will work to increase AAPI representation and address issues that impact the community. The caucus includes 12 founding members from Georgia's House and Senate and will have 11 voting members for the 2023 legislative session. State senator and caucus founding member Michelle Au (D-Johns Creek) said the caucus will represent the AAPI community and "help build larger coalitions to ensure that the voices and issues at the Capitol fully represent our diverse electorate."
