Johns Creek Girl Scouts Have a 'Block Party'

Troop 3008 Girl Scouts in Johns Creek recently earned their first cadette badge – thanks to a block party.

They participated in an Arts On The Creek’s community participatory art project The Block Party.

Troop Leaders Christy Mackley and Alissa Hogg supported the project where the scouts created works of art using blocks of wood donated by The Home Depot in Johns Creek. 

Block Party entries will culminate in an exhibition this fall of work by Georgia artists. Cash prizes of $50 for students, $75 for adults and $125 for professional artists will be awarded.

“This presented an excellent opportunity for the girls of Troop 3008 to earn their woodworker badge in a creative way,” Mackley said in a press release. “With this project these girls learned how to properly swing a hammer, use a level, function an electric screwdriver, and saw and sand wood.” 

Hogg added, “They then used these new skills to create memory blocks as entries to The Block Party, each representing one of their own personal communities.”
