Here are the top three stories in Johns Creek today:

  1. People used to refer to Atlanta as "Black Mecca," but new census data shows that over the past ten years, Atlanta's suburban cities, like Johns Creek, are becoming even more diverse. Johns Creek Mayor John Bradberry said, "We are considered the most diverse city in Georgia." Johns Creek recently celebrated Lunar New Year and its first-ever Diwali festival. According to Bradberry, the city has talked about transitioning from "suburban to semi-urban," when only fifteen years ago Johns Creek was discussing the transition from "semi-rural to suburban." (FOX 5 Atlanta)
  2. On Feb. 18, relatives of enslaved people buried at Macedonia Cemetery, a historical Black burial site off Medlock Bridge Road in Johns Creek, gathered at Macedonia Cemetery. Members of the Johns Creek Historical Society spoke about the history of the cemetery and Sabrina Aquell spoke about the city purchasing the cemetery. The Johns Creek City Council officially acquired the land in September 2021, although the Georgia Cemetery Law states, “human remains and burial objects are not property to be owned by the person or entity.” A few weeks ago, Aquell told Johns Creek Mayor John Bradberry, "I think this cemetery should be left for our family, for our children, for us to decide what we want to put up here." (Appen Media)
  3. Fulton County Schools is piloting a new panic alert system, CENTEGIX Crisis System, at High Point Elementary School. Teachers and staff wear a badge that allows them to call for help with the push of a button. School staff and the district police department are immediately alerted to the location of the badge and the type of emergency. Different alerts correspond to the number of taps, which include a child needing medical attention and a threat requiring a full-school lockdown. (11 Alive)
