Later Start Date Approved For Fulton Students

The Fulton County School Board adopted calendars for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years.

FULTON COUNTY, GA — The Fulton County School Board has adopted a later start date for its students for the next two school years. Board members approved the change in its adoption of the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school calendars.

The first day of school for the upcoming year will be Aug. 12, 2019. Professional development and teacher pre-planning will take place Aug. 2-5 and Aug. 6-9. The last day of school is May 22, 2020.

For comparison's sake, the first day of school for the current year was Aug. 6, 2018. The 2017-18 school year began on Aug. 7, 2017.

For the 2020-21 school year, the first day of school is set for Aug. 10, 2020. Professional development is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 3 and pre-planning is set for Aug. 4-7. The last day of school is May 26, 2021.

Samantha Maxey, a spokesperson for the school system, said the recommendation to push back the start date stems from feedback the district received from the community.

"The school system sought input on the calendars from parents, community members, principals, teachers and students," she added. "The calendars also were presented for stakeholder input during school board community meetings."

The system states both school years each contain 178 classroom instructional days: 86 for the first semester and 92 for the second semester.
