Here are the top three stories today in Johns Creek:
- Crowds gathered on Aug. 8 to celebrate Old Soldiers Day at the Legion Post in Alpharetta. The event, arranged by American Legion Post 201, featured a barbecue, guest speakers, and presentations from the Greater Atlanta Buffalo Soldiers and Johns Creek Veterans Association Honor Guard. This is the 70th year American Legion Post 201 has sponsored the Old Soldiers Day celebration and the third year that the celebration did not feature a parade. (Appen Media)
- On Monday, a Fulton County judge heard arguments on a lawsuit challenging the state's Heartbeat Law. The law bans abortions after a "heartbeat" is detected, which usually happens around 6 weeks and could even be before the person knows they are pregnant. The lawsuit, filed shortly after the Heartbeat law went into effect this summer, was filed by attorneys for a women's reproductive rights group to temporarily halt the law. (Fox 5 Atlanta)
- Governor Brian Kemp will deliver his Environmental Address at 11:15 a.m. on Friday in nearby Duluth. Due to the pandemic, this will be the first time Kemp can present the address in two years. The Governor's Environmental Adress was started by the Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful Committee in 2001. (Gwinnett Daily Post)
