Here are the top three stories in Johns Creek today:
- On Sunday, Mar. 5, protests at the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center turned violent and police officers were attacked with large rocks, bricks, Molotov cocktails, and fireworks. Police arrested 23 people, only two of which were from Georgia, and charged them with domestic terrorism. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said no officers were injured during the incident and "non-lethal enforcement methods" were used to disperse the crowd and make arrests. Gov. Brian Kemp said the violent protesters chose "destruction and vandalism" over "legitimate protest." (Subscription: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
- On Thursday, Mar. 2, Rep. Michelle Au, a Democrat from Johns Creek, said she and House Public Safety Chair J. Collins reached a "handshake deal" that the gun storage bill will have a hearing sometime during this session. Au sponsored multiple gun bills that would create universal gun sale background checks, three-day waiting periods to buy guns, make leaving a firearm where a child can access it a misdemeanor, and more. Au said she will announce the date and time of the hearing when it is scheduled. She encouraged "gun safety advocates to get ready to bring your voices back to the Capitol when we finally hear HB161. It’s been a long time coming."(Georgia Recorder)
- The Ivy Bridge Academy in Johns Creek has advanced to the next round of the 2022-23 International Public Policy Forum (IPPF) competition, where high school students compete in written and oral debates on issues of public policy for a $10,000 grand prize. The Ivy Bridge Academy's debate team is now part of the "Sweet 16" round, where only 16 teams are left in the competition after starting with 220 teams from around the world. If the Ivy Bridge Academy team advances to the "Elite 8" round, which will be announced on Mar. 30, they will compete in the IPPF Finals in New York City on May 6. (Johns Creek Patch)
