Here are the top three stories in Johns Creek today:
- The six suspects arrested during a riot in downtown Atlanta on Saturday night, Jan. 21, were booked into the Fulton County Jail. Atlanta police released the names, mugshots, and charges for the suspects. All except one were from out-of-state. Each suspect is facing four misdemeanor and four felony charges including second-degree criminal damage, first-degree arson, interference with government property, and domestic terrorism. No one was injured during the violent protest but three businesses were damaged, windows were broken, one police car was damaged, and one police car was set on fire. According to police, some of the suspects who were arrested had explosives. (Free: Fox 5 Atlanta; Subscription: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
- The Fulton County Board of Health has partnered with StopHIVATL and the Atlanta Harm Reduction Coalition to provide free fentanyl test strips, which are available now. Between 2019 and 2021, fentanyl-involved overdose deaths increased by 218 percent in Georgia. Darryl Carver with the Fulton County Board of Health said, "Testing drugs for fentanyl can save lives." Carver explained that fentanyl is now found in other drugs including pain pills, cocaine, and marijuana when users are not expecting it. According to Carver, "Allowing users to test their drugs does not encourage or condone illegal drug use, but it does save lives and provides a chance for substance use disorder treatment and recovery."
