J. Wayne Baughman
JCSO Music Director and Conductor J. Wayne Baughman studied choral and orchestral
conducting, earning undergraduate and graduate degrees in music education from the
University of Alabama and advanced studies in conducting at the University of
Michigan.
In 1974, Maestro Baughman immediately became involved with the Atlanta Symphony
Orchestra and Choruses upon his arrival in Atlanta. For 25 years, he was a frequent
vocal soloist, chorus member, and rehearsal conductor under the guidance of the late
Robert Shaw. He was well known for his oratorio performances as a bass soloist. He
collaborated with Maestro Shaw on numerous performance projects, including the
Mozart Requiem Mass, J.S. Bach's St. John Passion, and Handel's Messiah. In 1990,
as bass soloist, Maestro Baughman shared the honor of a Grammy Award for the
Telarc recording of Belshazzar's Feast (Walton) and Chichester Psalms (Bernstein) with
Robert Shaw and the ASO.
Maestro Baughman has held conducting positions at the State University of New York
at Cortland and Brevard Music Center. He also served as music director at Peachtree
Christian Church in Atlanta for nine years, where his performances of major choral-orchestral works received critical acclaim. Maestro Baughman is recently retired from liturgical music.
Ken Double
A former radio and television sportscaster who started taking organ lessons as an 8-
year-old in Chicago, KEN DOUBLE has enjoyed a second career focused on his love of
the music of the theatre pipe organ. As a sportscaster, Ken broadcast NBA and major college basketball, NHL, IHL and AHL hockey, the worldwide broadcast of the Indy 500, and more. He spent two years as the “Voice of the Atlanta Knights” hockey team from 1992-to-94.
But since retiring from broadcasting in 2008, Ken has performed concerts on the great
theatre pipe organs around the world. He also helped establish the Long Center
Theatre Organ Society in Lafayette, Indiana; spent ten years as the President of the
American Theatre Organ Society; and currently is one of the two organists who perform
on Mighty Mo, the iconic 4/42 Möller pipe organ at the Atlanta Fox Theatre.
Ken Double performed his first concert in 1978; has more than 20 recordings to his
credit; has toured Australia and New Zealand 8 times; and in June of 2022 will celebrate
his 40th annual concert at Long Center in Lafayette, IN, on the Wurlitzer organ he
helped create and install.
Ken has been thrilled to not only perform many times on some of the greatest theatre
organs across the United States, but to also have the honor of assisting the chapters
and groups that stage the concerts in marketing the fundraising; enjoyed helping grow
the ATOS Summer Youth Adventure, the camp-like event that has provided more than
80 young people the opportunity to learn to play (including at least 6 new concert artists
who have grown from the program). He has also played a part in finding new homes for
theatre organs, thus introducing the art form to new audiences in many locations.
Concert and recording artist, administrator, promoter and fundraiser, broadcaster and
entertainer, Ken Double has enjoyed, as he says, “getting paid to have fun.”
In its fifteenth season, the Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra is metro Atlanta's only fully professional, part-time symphonic orchestra, consisting of professional musicians from all over the greater metro Atlanta area. The Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Founder and Music Director J. Wayne Baughman, provides musical enrichment for the community of Johns Creek through a three-concert series of performances and additional educational programs and special events each year.
