Here are the top three stories today in Johns Creek:

  1. In his victory speech, Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock spoke about the 2021 law that imposed several new restrictions on voting and argued that the hours-long lines to vote were voter suppression. The new law shortened the runoff period from nine weeks to four weeks, and local election offices had fewer locations for the runoff election. Gabriel Sterling, a top official in the secretary of state's office, said Fulton County had 13 fewer early voting locations for the runoff than it did for the Nov. 8 general election. According to the secretary of state's office, 56.9 percent of registered voters voted in the general election, and just over 50 percent voted in the runoff. (GPB.org)
  2. The first Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) caucus will convene at Georgia's General Assembly 2023 legislative session in January. The AAPI will work on the core issues of the community, including increasing hate crime protections against Asian Americans, increasing civic participation, fighting racial and ethnic stereotypes, and increasing access to language, education and other social services. State Sen. Dr. Michelle Au, a Democrat of Johns Creek, said AAPI voters "tend to be treated in a way that minimizes their presence and their impact."(Axios)
