"Throughout his career, Lt. Milam has tirelessly served his community and helped those in need. Now, he and his family need our support during this incredibly difficult time. The loss of their home and possessions, and mounting medical expenses, have created an overwhelming burden, especially during the holiday season," police said in a statement.

"We ask for your kindness and generosity in donating whatever you can to assist a man who has spent his career helping others. Together, we can help ease the financial stress for Lt. Milam and his family and show our gratitude for his years of service to our community."

A GoFundMe established for Milam has raised at least $17,000 as of early Monday. Its ultimate goal is $60,000.

"Please join us in lifting up Lieutenant Milam and his family in prayer as they face a challenging time. For over two decades, Lt. Milam has faithfully served the Kennesaw community, and now it’s our turn to support him. As he recovers from his injuries and they work to rebuild after losing their family belongings, let’s come together to help in any way we can. Consider donating to support Lt. Milam’s recovery and his family during this difficult journey. Every bit of help counts," Kennesaw Police said in a statement.
