Eschewing the fast lanes of I-75 in favor of the winding backroads, we enjoyed a fall foliage and waterfall journey to two nearby Tennessee state parks. Followed by an overnight stay in Chattanooga, it's a great getaway for those who love bucolic scenery, fall color, waterfalls and mountain drives.

Visiting both Rock Island and Falls Creek Falls State Parks is a full-day adventure that allows time for sampling the waterfall hikes at these two natural gems. But both parks offer lots of other hiking and outdoor opportunities that can occupy a family for hours or days.

Falls Creek Falls, Tennessee
The strenuous hike to the base of Falls Creek Falls offer a great perspective on the height of the tallest falls in the eastern US.

The premier waterfall views can been enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities, as convenient observation points offer easily-access. A variety of hiking trails offer close-up views, but may be challenging for those with limited mobility.

Rock Island State Park, Tennessee
The unique Twin Falls at Rock Island State park erupt from underground caverns in the high bluffs, creating incredible cascading falls.

Beyond the beauty of the falls, each occupies a unique place in waterfall lore. At Rock Island, the falls don't tumble from a stream, but rather erupt from cliffside bluffs after water travels through underground caverns. And Falls Creek Falls is the highest free-falling falls in the Eastern US at 256 feet.
